Abu Ubaidah (RA) – The Trustworthy One

Every nation has a trustworthy guardian, and the trustworthy guardian of this Ummah is Abu ‘Ubaidah bin Jarrah.”

Bismillah,

Trust is the foundation of all relationships.

However, being trustworthy is no easy feat!

It requires you to fight with your selfish wants and desires, for the sake of others.

Today, we’ll go over the life of Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (RA), known as “Amin al-Ummah” (The Trustworthy Guardian of the Ummah), his life is a remarkable testimony to selflessness, integrity, and leadership in the service of Islam.

Background

Abu Ubaidah (RA) was born into the noble Quraysh tribe in Mecca and was one of the first ten people to embrace Islam, thanks to the efforts of Abu Bakr (RA).

Despite intense persecution from the Quraysh, Abu Ubaidah (RA) remained resolute in his faith and dedication to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

His early embrace of Islam showed his deep trust in the Prophet (PBUH) and his message, which would shape his future roles in the Muslim community.

Key Contributions and Military Leadership

Abu Ubaidah participated in all major battles alongside the Prophet (PBUH), including Badr, Uhud, and the Battle of the Trench.

In the Battle of Badr, he showed his courage by putting his loyalty to Islam above family ties.

When confronted by his own father, who was fighting for the Quraysh, Abu Ubaidah killed him in self-defense, demonstrating his unshakable commitment to the cause of Islam.

He was later appointed as the leader of the Muslim army in the conquest of Syria during the caliphate of Umar (RA).

Known for his humble leadership style, he led his troops with honour, ensuring that the teachings of Islam were upheld even during times of war.

Under his command, the Muslim army achieved significant victories, including the Battle of Yarmouk, which solidified Muslim control over the Levant.

Character and Legacy

Abu Ubaidah is one of the 10 promised paradise by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Beyond his military accomplishments, Abu Ubaidah (RA) was admired for his humility and piety.

Despite holding significant power and authority, he lived a modest life, often refusing material wealth or luxury. Umar (RA) famously said, “If Abu Ubaidah was alive, I would have appointed him as the next Caliph.”

Abu Ubaidah’s (RA) legacy extends beyond his battlefield achievements. His leadership, integrity, and humility continue to inspire Muslims around the world today.

Application Today

In our modern world, Abu Ubaidah’s life is a powerful example of humility, sacrifice, and ethical leadership.

His ability to lead without seeking personal glory reminds us that true leadership lies in serving others and remaining loyal to a greater purpose.

Resulting in others trusting him.

If we become trustworthy people, we will benefit in this life and the next.

We will bond better with our friends and family.

Our colleagues will be more willing to work with and support us.

Our customers will buy more from us.

More importantly, Allah (SWT) will record it as good deeds and bless our efforts.

Conclusion

To conclude, there are no downsides to being trustworthy.

Only the devils whispers make us think so.

We must combat the temptation to lie and deceive others for a worldy gain.

Whatever you achieve through lying or deceiving will have no blessings.
